I think stories like this work because Americans want to help while remaining detached. In Ghana, if you told a stranger you were hungry, they would invite you over for dinner before they would hand you money. I got a similar story where there this woman was trying to get money to "get home to her son". I told her I'd drive her home, and asked for her address. She looked like a deer in headlights lol. One one hand, they are most likely gonna use it to cop some get high. On the other hand, maybe they won't... and really want a sammich/bus fare/coffee. It usually comes down to if I have the change to spare or not, and in the past I have been able to spare it. But these days, I try not to carry any paper or coin currency, so these folks have generally been out of luck with me. ... But I've always wondered why they linger around in the city homeless when they could easily wander off into the woods somewhere and built a shack out of garbage. Eat squirrel and pigeon meat and live off the land like the native man. Or live underground in the abandoned subway under the Ben Franklin bridge like "Dark Days". I'd be a resourceful bum.~ I have a little internal battle with myself about this all the time.
